"It is hard to fail, but it is worse to never have tried to succeed."
Being lucky enough to grow up in a small town in Northern Nevada with a family that loved hunting and a father and grandfather who were trappers, it is easy to see where I got my love of the outdoors. Nevada was a great place to grow up, but there were not enough tags to keep me busy. At 20 years old, I made the decision to move to Montana. With all the over-the-counter tags in Idaho and Montana, you would think I would have been content, but I love exploring new country, so I continued to apply for tags all across the West.
In 2012, Garth Carter came to Montana to persuade me to come to work for him at Huntin' Fool. It was honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made. Working for Huntin' Fool has been a dream job and allowed my family to experience adventures I never thought would be possible. One of the best parts of my job is helping the Huntin' Fool community experience those same kinds of adventures.
Huntin' Fool has been a great fit for me as I have been consulting and working with application services since 2005. Knowing state regulations, draw statistics, and following trophy areas is second nature to me. Since I was old enough to apply, I have been religious about understanding new guidelines, critiquing new areas, studying state statistics, networking with other hunters, and putting boots on the ground across the West.
Every year, my family and I apply for 20+ different states, and each year, we draw a handful of great tags. I have hunted from Mexico to Canada and 15 states in between. I average over 100 days in the field and hunt between six and seven different states per year. The majority of my hunts are self-guided and take place on public land.
When I first started at Huntin’ Fool, my boys' ages were 3, 4, and 6. Since then, we have been able to exploit the youth application system throughout the West, and they have had the privilege of drawing countless tags that most only dream of. I encourage all parents to take their kids hunting, and I am very passionate about youth hunting and passing on the traditions of our forefathers.
My strategy is to draw tags that provide the best opportunity for harvesting a trophy animal, no matter the weapon or season. Every year, you can find me out hunting with a bow, rifle, and muzzleloader. I enjoy hunting all big game and have been lucky enough to harvest bull elk in eight different western states, but being a Nevada boy, my passion will always be hunting mule deer.
