River Based Brown Bear / Black Bear Combo

These Brown Bear / Black Bear combo hunts are conducted in Southcentral Alaska (Chugach Mountains) along the Copper River in a limited guide use US Forest Service permitted area. This outfitter is the only guide permitted to operate in one of the two areas. You will be picked up in Anchorage and drive about five hours to the river near Chitina. From there you travel downriver via jetboat to access a good brown bear area. Camp is made along the river in a 10x10 tent with cots and small heaters. The jet boat allows hunter and guide to move freely along the river and the heavy salmon run keeps the bears interested and sizable. Hunters typically see 8.0-9.0 foot bears with some bears getting into 10’ class. The black bears are respectable with most boars squaring well about 6'. Your guide will often take you to high ground to glass across the river drainage to the river bed where the bears come looking for salmon. Its often effective to drift the river to catch bears cruising the river bank.

For the spring hunts, the outfitter maintains bait sites along the river. These hunts are often a combination of spot and stalk as well as sitting baits. This area has seen very little pressure in the last 10 years as it is far enough from the larger cities to deter most local interest and guiding is very limited due to the forest service permit. Option to fly in via bush plane for the Copper River/Chugach hunt will incur an additional charge. Hunt cost includes food, tent, qualified/experience guide.

Hunters can also harvest a second back bear on a trophy fee if an additional tag is purchased prior to leaving Anchorage.
