HUNT DETAILS:
For hunters seeking a true wilderness adventure, the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia offers one of the most thrilling moose hunts on the planet. Located in an outstanding region, this hunt takes place across eight expansive, free-range hunting areas, all of which are privately leased from the Russian government. With no high fences, every moose encountered is 100% wild—roaming vast, untamed landscapes at elevations ranging from 500 to 1,000 meters.

The primary target is the East Siberian moose (Alces alces buturlini), one of the largest moose subspecies in the world. These bulls boast impressive size, with many carrying antler spreads of 50 to 70 inches. During the peak season from November through December, hunters can expect to see 5 to 10 moose per day, both cows and bulls, thanks to the region’s high population density. Success rates during this prime window approach 100%, making it one of the most productive moose hunts available anywhere.

Access to hunting grounds is achieved using 4x4 vehicles and snowmobiles, depending on snow conditions. Most shots are taken within 50 to 100 yards, making this an ideal hunt for rifle hunters, with archery hunts available upon request. There is no minimum size requirement, but guides focus on pursuing mature bulls with wide antler spreads, ensuring a quality trophy experience.

Included in the hunt are airport pickup and drop-off in Petropavlovsk, all in-country transportation, lodging and meals, trophy care, and full guiding services. Not included are international flights, visa and insurance fees, hotel stays before or after the hunt, personal expenses, and additional trophies or taxidermy. A $400 formalities package covers necessary paperwork. Meat from harvested moose remains in the region and is shared with locals; however, hunters often enjoy a celebratory field barbecue using select cuts.

Trophies cannot be transported back to the U.S. in luggage. Instead, they are processed locally and shipped approximately 5–6 months after the hunt, once all export documentation is completed. In the event of a wounded and unrecovered animal, it is considered harvested per local policy.

This hunt is rated EASY in difficulty, making it accessible to a wide range of hunters. With towering bulls, dramatic terrain, and high success rates, Kamchatka offers an unmatched opportunity to pursue one of the world’s most majestic big game animals in one of its wildest frontiers.

The Kamchatka moose (Alces alces buturlini, sometimes referred to in older texts as Alces alces cameloides) is typically considered either a regional population or a subspecies variant of the East Siberian moose, depending on the classification system being used. While the East Siberian moose is a broader subspecies found across eastern Siberia, Yakutia, Amur, and parts of northern Mongolia, the Kamchatka moose is isolated to the Kamchatka Peninsula and exhibits some notable physical distinctions.

Thanks to the region’s rich volcanic soils, abundant food sources, and relatively few predators, Kamchatka moose tend to grow larger bodies and carry wider antler spreads than their mainland relatives. In contrast, East Siberian moose from the mainland are generally slightly smaller, with narrower antlers on average.

Though scientifically the Kamchatka moose is often grouped with the East Siberian subspecies, many hunting outfitters and record-keeping organizations (such as SCI and ROW) recognize it as a distinct trophy category due to its exceptional size and geographic isolation.
