Idaho OTC Black Bear Hunts

HUNT DETAILS:
This Idaho bear hunt takes place in a two-bear area, where hunters can choose between baited hunts, spot and stalk, hound hunts, or combinations of these methods. Since 2014, the outfitter has consistently delivered at least an 85% shot opportunity, often reaching 100%. All hunts are conducted in units that allow each hunter to harvest up to two bears, with about half of the bears taken being color-phase.

Spring hunts are exclusively baited, while fall hunts (early season) offer baited, hound, and spot and stalk options, either from a base camp or a remote horseback camp. There's also a unique backpack hunt that combines spot and stalk hunting with fly fishing in a remote, trail-less drainage area that sees little human pressure.

Hunters enjoy a flexible daily schedule—breakfasts vary depending on the plan, and the day can include full-time hunting or be broken up with activities like fishing, hot springs visits, or scenic drives. Bear activity around baits occurs throughout the day, with good success reported even in midday hours. Though activity slows in the rain, bears are regularly taken from early morning through the afternoon and evening. The outfitter encourages hunters to spend as many hours as possible in the field to increase success.

Ground blinds are the primary setups, with some tree stands available. All setups are placed considering wind and sun advantages, typically 30–50 yards from the bait (due to dense forest). Transportation to bait sites is provided via truck or side-by-side, and baits are refreshed with food and scent before each sit. Easy and challenging access options are available to suit all hunters, and radios are provided for communication.

After a successful hunt, bears are usually retrieved whole and skinned at camp, although some may need to be processed on the mountain. Taking meat is optional in Idaho, but the outfitter can quarter and package it if desired. Hides are cooled overnight and either frozen for transport or delivered to a trusted taxidermist. A check-in station is located about 20 miles away.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Accommodations are nice wall tents with mattress beds, lights, cabinets, and charging stations. Wood stove AND propane Buddy heaters. Hot running water with sink and shower for regular sanitation. Generator power. Cook tent with food/coffee/drinks always available. Big fire pit for socializing. Freezers for freezing your hide. Biweekly serviced Port-o-potties in spring season, outhouses in fall season.

Over-the-counter tags are available and can be purchased online through the Idaho Fish and Game website. You will need to coordinate with HFA or your outfitter prior to purchasing to ensure you purchase the required tag and license.
