South Dakota Bison Hunting 2025

The bison herd on Custer State Park is doing really well. Both residents and non-residents may apply for bison hunts. Hunting opportunities are broken down into two categories – trophy bull and non-trophy bison. Hunting bison within Custer State Park is highly regulated. Bison taken in Custer State Park are eligible for Boone and Crockett’s record book program. Many top-scoring bison in the B&C record book come from this herd in South Dakota. Archery equipment is now allowed for all bison hunts.

A hunter is required to schedule and hunt with a Park-provided guide for all bison hunts at no additional charge. The Park will also provide field handling and may provide transportation of the carcass. The guide will indicate which animals are eligible and will approve the location to harvest. Applications will be available online for all bison hunts in July. Group applications are not allowed for trophy bull hunts. You must have 2 or more preference points to be considered in the draw.

South Dakota's Best Bison Units from Our Application Service Team

APP TEAM
Unit Unit Description
CU124, Trophy bull This hunt is a management tool to remove the oldest breeding bulls from the herd of Custer State Park. These bulls are typically 10+ years old. The trophy bulls are Boone & Crockett eligible as the hunt takes place on the entire Custer State Park. This is a two-day hunt where hunters can hunt with either a rifle or archery equipment.
CU125, Non-trophy bull The purpose of the non-trophy bison hunt is to remove excess cows and young bulls from the herd of Custer State Park. Designated management animals will be moved to a 2,000-acre enclosure where license holders may kill any of the animals inside. A guide will designate this class of bison as your target on your one-day hunt. Non-trophy bulls are typically 2 1/2 years old and will range from 900 to 1,100+ pounds. Hunters can hunt with either a rifle or archery equipment.
