Oregon Mountain Goat

For 2025, there will be 23 mountain goat tags available in the draw. The goats are found in the steep country of Eastern Oregon, including Wallowa, Elkhorn, Strawberry Mountains, and Central Cascades near Mt. Jefferson. For non-resident applicants, Oregon will have two mountain goat tags available — one in Elkhorn No. 2 and one in South Snake River No. 1. Oregon is very conservative on the number of goat tags they issue, so there are great goats in all units. Every year, Oregon hunters are entering goats into the Boone and Crockett record book.

The South Snake River No. 1 hunt (hunt code 959B1) has 50" potential. The season dates for this hunt are September 1-30. This unit was combined with the Hat Point unit in 2024. The population is down in the Hat Point unit, but with mature billies available, they wanted hunters to have the opportunity to hunt it as well. On the Hat Point portion of the unit, there is good road access to the top of the rim where hunters can glass up mountain goats below in the steep country. You are going to have to lose 1,500-4,000 feet in elevation to kill your goat and then pack it back up the steep slopes to the top where you started. The South Snake River area is a lot more remote country where hunters are going to access the area by backpacking or horseback.

This area does hold some great goats, but expect a physical hunt. An outfitter would be a good choice for this hunt. There are Boone and Crockett goats alive on this unit. Non-resident draw odds in 2024 were 1 in 73. There are a total of four goat tags on this unit between the two seasons.

Oregon produces giant goats, and the harvest success for all Oregon mountain goat hunts typically runs near 100%. The draw odds are tough, but if you already have a hunting license, it’s only $8 to apply. Also, don’t forget to buy a raffle ticket when you apply as Oregon also raffles off a mountain goat tag.
