Muskox permits were reduced slightly this year for the fall season on Nunivak Island. While residents have some open registration hunts available, non-residents must draw a permit to hunt anywhere in the state. Nunivak Island (unit 18) will have both a fall 2025 hunt and a winter 2026 hunt available in this draw period. Permit holders will need to hire a local transporter for lodging, meals, and transportation to the remote portions of the island to locate herds of muskox. Fall hunters will be confined to the coastal areas along the beach using a transporter’s boat. Winter hunters will be able to access almost all reaches of the island with the use of snowmobiles and sleds. Huntin’ Fool recommends that hunters apply in the muskox draw as a party of two so that two hunters can split some costs and share fees. Although a guide is not required for this free-ranging species, self-guided hunters should expect to pay $8,000-$12,000 each for airplane fees, transporter services, locking-tag cost, access permits, and other associated travel costs.
| Unit | Unit Description |
|---|---|
| 18, Nunivak Island, Fall | Bull only. This hunt takes place on Nunivak Island via the village of Mekoryuk. Native land trespass fees and a guide/transporter fee are necessary to have a successful hunt. Expect wet, soggy weather for this fall hunt. Muskox herds are usually accessed on this hunt by boat drop-off on the beach and then hiking as ATVs are not allowed on the federal refuge portion of the unit. |
| 18, Nunivak Island, Winter | Bull only. This extreme winter hunt takes place on Nunivak Island via the village of Mekoryuk. The long season dates are intended to disperse hunting pressure across the season. A native land trespass fee and a guide/transporter fee are necessary to have a successful hunt. Expect bitter cold temperatures with extreme wind possible. Muskox herds are usually accessed by snowmobiles ridden out from the village. |
