Alaska Mountain Goat Hunting 2024

Guide Required

All huntable mountain goat populations are managed through draw and registration permits. Alaska does not offer over-the-counter permits for mountain goat, but most units have open registration hunts, which are essentially over-the-counter hunts with emergency closure protocols to manage these hunts based on draw hunt success and harvest limits. For example, all draw hunts in unit 7 will have registration-only hunts that may be open November 1-14 following the early season draw hunts. This hunt structure allows for better control to manage the nanny take each season.

What's New For 2025

A new regulation also requires all goat hunters to successfully complete the Mountain Goat Identification quiz prior to hunting, and proof of completion is required in the field. The Mountain Goat Identification quiz is available online at:

Alaska Mountain Goat Season Dates

Mountain goat is a guide-required species, so it is best to contact Huntin’ Fool Adventures to discuss all outfitters and expectations. Mountain goat hunts vary widely, from intense multi-day backpacking expeditions requiring ropes and crampons to more leisurely, yacht-based late-season hunts cruising along coastal inlets. Weather dictates the success rates of goat hunts more than any other species in the state. While mountain goat hunters may desire to wait until late season to target a long-haired billy, the Alaska winter may show up earlier than expected in any corner of the state. The southwestern portion of Kodiak Island is managed through an open registration hunt with a two goat bag limit. This unique hunt is open August through March annually. This hunt should be on the list of those with resident kindred relatives who live in Alaska. Otherwise, there are very few registered guides that allow their clients to pursue two goats on this hunt.
