Product Review: SIG SAUER OSCAR6 HDX PRO Spotting Scope

Pushing the limits of what’s possible with a reimagined spotting scope, SIG SAUER introduces the OSCAR6 HDX PRO Spotting Scope. With the help of SIG’s proprietary OmniScan™ image stabilization technology, this state-of-the-art spotter uses an internal digital accelerometer to detect the speed and severity of the device’s movement, tailoring the degree of applied stabilization specifically to the circumstance and eliminating unwanted shake or vibration.

“I’ll be honest, when I first heard about the SIG OSCAR6 Image Stabilized Spotting Scope, I was skeptical. I couldn’t wrap my head around why a spotting scope, usually mounted on a tripod, would need image stabilization. However, all that changed during a recent backpack caribou hunt.

I was glassing distant ridges using my Zulu 6 12x binos (which are also image stabilized, no tripod needed) when a herd of caribou suddenly moved out from behind a ridge. They were in and out of sight and moving fast. I didn’t have time to set up a tripod, and I needed to zoom in quickly to determine if any of the bulls were worth pursuing. I grabbed the OSCAR6, turned the dial to stabilize the image, and that’s when the magic happened. I was immediately able to track the herd, even as they disappeared and reappeared across the rugged terrain. Getting a rock-steady 32x zoomed image without a tripod was an absolute game changer.

The OSCAR6 also doubled as a digiscoping lens, allowing me to shoot high-quality video and stills that would’ve been nearly impossible with a traditional setup. I’m not saying this will replace $10K worth of camera gear or give you cinematic production quality, but for capturing those once-in-a-lifetime hunting moments while shaving the weight of a tripod, it exceeded all my expectations.” – Garth Jenson, Hunt Advisor
